on blogging

I realised there are two (okay, maybe three) main things that stop me from writing more. Even though I always promise myself I will from now on.

The first one: the internalised expectation of how long a blogpost needs to be. Well, there’s no blogpost police to enforce the minimum word count. And if there is, you better call them because this blog post ain’t gonna be very long.

The second one: the perceived lack of originality of most of the topics I wanted to write about. That may well be so, to some. At the same time, given the flood of AI-generated content, the bar for originality is getting lower by the day. And it’s only going to get exponentially worse over time (it’s already pretty bad- at least I catch myself way too often wondering if an article I am reading on Medium was written by a human; my guess is usually ‘no’). Going against the inevitable dehumanisation of the internet actually feels good. I guess I even feel responsible for generating more content because of that. Which is futile anyhow.

The third one: the expected effort that writing a blog post will require. But this of course is a function of the first two variables. As the bars for length and originality are lowered, the effort needed to produce a blog post becomes manageable.

Let this entry be the new standard. No earth-shattering content. No need to be clever or meet a self-imposed word quota. Just thinking out loud, as the name of the website suggests.
